Released thief busted for meth lab in Alto, TX

Rural East Texas law enforcement works out of sight and out of mind. When they run to the television cameras, they give only half the story. Like the fact their most recent major drug bust in Cherokee County was a guy they let walk out the Rusk, TX jail 5 days before they raided him. It's protocol to surveil a crackhead's house while they're incarcerated, even enter and go through their belongings.

"Call the Feds - we just released a live one...gonna lead us right to it..."

On July 13, 2023, Robert Jessie Martin, 44, was busted in his Alto, TX area meth lab with over 25,000 pills, 40 pounds of pill powder, pill presses, and 5 ounces of methamphetamine. He had been released from Cherokee County custody a week prior on $1000 BOND for Criminal Mischief. Martin had been arrested for THEFT and Failure to Appear in February 2023 and had bonded out; his THEFT charges were reduced to CRIMINAL MISCHIEF. Knowing he wouldn't have the chance to jump bail again, Cherokee County nabbed him during a drug raid conducted with Homeland Security, the DEA and the DPS in tow. They all want the credit when they display an illicit drug cache after executing an arrest warrant, while collectively developing amnesia when releasing the guy a week earlier to follow around town. Martin was turned over to federal authorities needing some headlines and funding.

Shifty eyed thieves itching for a Get Out of Jail Free Card can lead to big busts. Authorities just have to encourage them to keep stealing your property after they cut them loose. You'd think Martin is an out of state drug King Pin, instead of just another local arrestee with a history of theft and an outstanding Warrant. Robert Martin is a registered Cherokee County, TX voter with a residence listed in Rusk, TX. He owns 75 acres and a trailer house north of Alto, TX, where he thought he could play Breaking Bad in the woods. Martin was out on $1000 bond for stealing just a few days prior.

Robert Martin, 44 of Alto, was arrested at the scene and officials said he is facing anticipated charges of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.
